Smart Home Security Upgrades Worth Considering
Smart devices can add real protection, but only when the basics are in place. Here is where to start and how to keep them secure.
Get the basics right first
Smart technology works best on top of a solid foundation. Before buying devices, check that:
- Exterior doors are solid, with sturdy frames and quality deadbolts
- Sliding doors have a secondary lock or security bar
- Ground-floor windows lock securely
- You know who has keys, and locks were changed when you moved in
Smart locks
A smart lock lets you unlock with a phone or code, share temporary access with family or trusted trades, and see when the door is used. Many models fit existing deadbolts.
- Choose a model with a physical key or keypad backup in case the battery runs low.
- Use unique access codes for each person, and remove codes you no longer need.
Video doorbells and cameras
A video doorbell lets you see and speak to visitors from anywhere and records activity at the front door. Outdoor cameras can cover side yards, garages and back entries.
- Focus cameras on your own property, out of respect for neighbors' privacy.
- Decide whether recordings are stored locally or in the cloud, and who can access them.
- Place cameras out of easy reach so they cannot be knocked aside.
Smart and motion lighting
Good lighting is one of the simplest deterrents. Motion-activated lights at entries, walkways and driveways remove hiding places, and smart bulbs or timers make the home look occupied while you are away.
Keep connected devices secure
- Use a strong, unique password for every device and account.
- Turn on two-step verification wherever it is offered.
- Keep device firmware and apps up to date.
- Secure your home Wi-Fi with a strong password and current encryption.
- Buy from manufacturers with a clear record of providing security updates.
Security and safe escape go together
Every lock, bar and grille should still let everyone get out quickly in a fire. Make sure window security devices release from the inside without a key, and pair your security upgrades with working smoke and carbon monoxide alarms.
